Africa Hall
Project Description
Africa Hall is the founding buildings for the permanent headquarters of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. An early 1960 modernist masterpiece designed by Arturo Mezzadimi, Africa Hall was the birthplace of the Order of African Unity (African Union) and the United Nations’ initial foray on the continent of Africa. Commissioned by Emperor HIM Haile Selassie, the building and grounds provided the first building enabling diplomatic engagement for the continent’s then 36 nations, including simultaneous interpretation technology, committee and function spaces.
Australian architectural firm Architectus Conrad Gargett (ACG) has led the design to revitalize this iconic 1960s building which represents one of the most significant modern heritage renovation projects on the African continent. The renovation, overseen by the ECA Africa Hall Project Management team, was directed by the principal architectural consulting team composed of Australian and Ethiopian architects, and the engineering team of Built Environment collective (BEC) and their corresponding consulting teams from Ethiopia.
FASTEK CONSULT was part of the consultant team in Ethiopia and was responsible for site supervision and commissioning alongside BEC and ACG teams.
